Family Responsibilities Discrimination (FRD) happens when an employee is unfairly penalized at work because of his or her obligations to provide care for family members.  It can include firing of the employee, passing over the employee for promotion, underpaying the employee, reducing her work hours and responsibilities, and denying her benefits.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY ABOUT FRD?

Civil rights laws on the books do protect parents and other caregivers from unfair treatment at work.  However, these laws could be greatly improved by specifically outlawing discrimination based on someone’s status as a family caregiver.  Click here to read more.

 

FRD in New York City

Former New York City Public Advocate, Betsy Gotbaum, introduced legislation that would amend the New York City Human Rights law to prohibit employment discrimination based on an individual’s perceived or actual status as a caregiver.    Learn more and take action!
