Recent Events

 ABB held a high level policy briefing on June 11 with the Public Health Association of NYC, the NY Paid Leave Coalition, and the NYU School of Law to highlight the public health imperative for paid sick leave.  

On May 12th, ABB's Sherry Leiwant spoke at Work Life, Home Life: Should Government Require Paid Leave?  at the New School. 

On May 13th, ABB's Sherry Leiwant spoke at a launch event for Sharon Lerner's new book, The War on Moms, in Park Slope, Brooklyn.  

 ABB  co-sponsored Dignity Overdue: Stand Together for the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, a town hall meeting on April 22d.

A Better Balance co-hosted an EQUAL PAY DAY FORUM on APRIL 19th from 6:00-8:00pm.

On January 28, ABB co-sponsored a forum at DEMOS with Lisa Dodson, author of the Moral Underground.  

On November 18, 2009, Nancy Rankin spoke at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School on a panel, "Successfully Managing A Career-Life-Family Balance."  

On November 17, 2009, Sherry Leiwant spoke on a panel about Paid Family Leave in New York at the New York City Bar Association.  Click here for more information. 

On November 17, 2009, there was a rally at 12:00 noon on the steps of city hall in New York City about the proposed paid sick days bill, followed by a public hearing in the Council Chambers at 1:00pm.  

 On October 26th, Dina Bakst delivered the keynote address at the annual meeting of the YWCA White Plains and Central Westchester.

On September 24, 2009, ABB's own Dina Bakst was a featured panelist at Taking Control of Your Career: Strategic Planning for Women Starting in the Profession, hosted by the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

On July 29, 2009,  A Better Balance, elected officials, community organizations, unions and businesses joined together on the steps of City Halltolaunch the campaign for Paid Sick Time for New York City. 

On June 23rd, domestic workers, employers and labor leaders assembled in Washington Square Park to call on the New York Senate to pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. 

On May 21, 2009, ABB's Phoebe Taubman spoke on a panel at NOW-NYC's event, Women, Power & Pay.

On April 22, 2009, ABB's Phoebe Taubman conducted a post-performance dialogue on "women's work" following EXIT CUCKOO, a play written and performed by Lisa Ramirez. 

On March 27th and 28th, 2009, Yale Law Women hosted a conference at Yale Law School entitled, Opt Out or Pushed Out: Are Women Choosing to Leave the Legal Profession?   For more information, please click here .

On February 11th, New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum held a press conference and rally on the steps of  City Hall in support of family caregivers and a proposed bill that would expressly protect them from employment discrimination.  To read the press release from the event, including remarks by ABB's Phoebe Taubman, please click here

January 26, 2009, Phoebe Taubman spoke on a panel at the Flex-Time Lawyers LLC program in Philadelphia on "Gen Y, Work/Life Balance & the Economic Downturn." 

 December 8, 2008, Yolanda Wu spoke on a panel at the Flex-Time Lawyers LLC program in New York City on "Forging Generational Bonds in a Changing Market."    

On November 21, 2008, Yolanda Wu testified before the New York State Asssembly's Standing Committee on Labor on the rights of domestic workers.  Click here to read her testimony.

On November 20, 2008, Sherry Leiwant and Nancy Rankin participated in a panel discussion on paid sick days at the New York Society for Ethical Culture at 2 West 64th Street.   Click here to read the flyer for the event.

 On October 29, 2008,  A Better Balance hosted a discussion with Pamela Stone, author of "Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home." 

On September 10, 2008, Sherry Leiwant and Nancy Rankin delivered a presentation at the Women's City Club of New York about the need for paid sick days in New York. 

 On September 4, 2008, A Better Balance co-sponsored an event at NYU Law School featuring the innovative student group, Building a Better Legal Profession. 

On July 23, 2008, Phoebe Taubman spoke at an event entitled, "What It's Really Like to Practice  Law in NYC as a Woman."   The panel discussion was sponsored by the Committee to Advance the Status of Women in the Profession of the New York Women's Bar Association and the Committees on Law Student Perspectives, Sex and the Law, and Women in the Profession of the New York City Bar. 

On May 6, 2008, Yolanda Wu participated in an Alfred P. Sloan and Family Research Network Panel Meeting in Boston, Responding to Working Families with Children with Disabilities: Where We Are, Where We Need to Be, and How to Get There.   For more information, click here.

On April 2, 2008, Yolanda Wu spoke on a panel at the NYU School of Law, The Realities of Law Practice. 

On February 13, 2008, A Better Balance co-sponsored a day-long conference on family responsibilities discrimination at NYU School of Law.   

On December 6, 2007, A Better Balance  testified before the City Council in support of Intro. 565A, a bill to amend the New York City Human Rights Law to prohibit employment discrimination against an individual based on his or her status as a caregiver.

On December 2, 2007, A Better Balance presented at a meeting organized by Jews for Racial Justice and Domestic Workers United to educate employers of domestic workers.

On November 10, 2007, A Better Balance spoke at the Freedom On Our Terms Conference about work/family issues and the need to mobilize policy-makers around a public policy agenda.
