 MODEL LAW

        - Model paid sick days law

A Better Balance worked with the National Partnership and the San Francisco Office of Labor Standards Enforcement to create model legislation for local advocates considering launching a paid sick days campaign.  If you have questions regarding the model legislation, or would like further information about the technical issues highlighted in the model law, please contact Sherry Leiwant at A Better Balance ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or 212-749-4042) or Sharyn Tejani at the National Partnership for Women and Families ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or 202-986-2600).

POLLING DATA

A national poll by Celinda Lake, sponsored by the National Partnership for Women & Families and the Multi-State Working Families Consortium, revealed that there is overwhelming public support for paid sick days.   Key findings include:

* Nine in 10 voters strongly favor a basic labor standard to guarantee a minimum number of paid sick days to all workers to care for themselves or immediate family members.

* Voters support paid sick days for all workers, which includes pro-rating the number of days that part-time workers receive.

* Voters don’t want small businesses, with fewer than 15 employees, to be exempt from paid sick days laws.

* Seven in 10 voters believe that part-time employees should be covered by paid sick days policies, though they should be included on a pro-rated basis.

According to a new survey by the National Opinon Research Center, more than three-quarters of workers polled view paid sick days as a basic right of employment that should be gauranteed by government.  For a full report of the poll results, please click here
