With an unprecedented care crisis affecting millions of working families, ABB rallies to raise awareness virtually on May 11 with prominent public figures and community leaders
A Better Balance (ABB), a national organization dedicated to advancing justice for workers caring for themselves and their loved ones, announced today that it will be convening virtually in celebration of its 15th anniversary.
With the theme of celebrating progress and the road ahead in tackling today’s unprecedented care crisis, on May 11, the organization will host a free event featuring public figures, elected officials, and community advocates making tangible change possible for workers and their families, and host candid discussions about their shared mission to create a future where all workers are in the position to care for themselves and their loved ones, without jeopardizing their economic security.
The event will feature remarks from:
- Samantha Bee, Host of Full Frontal With Samantha Bee on TBS;
- Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY);
- Colorado State Senator Faith Winter (D-Westminster);
- Charlotte Burrows, Chair of the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission
ABB will be honoring community leaders and advocates making an impact in the advocacy space with several awards, including:
- Chai Feldblum, former Commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and long-time civil rights leader;
- Ana Oliveira, President and CEO of The New York Women’s Foundation;
- Alysia Montaño, Olympic runner, three-time U.S. National Champion, and Co-Founder of &Mother;
- Natasha Jackson, South Carolina-based community advocate who experienced pregnancy discrimination firsthand and has continually been a powerful voice for change in the fight to secure safety accommodations for pregnant workers.
“Although we are not able to gather to celebrate our 15th anniversary in person, we know firsthand that creating a forum to tackle the unprecedented care crisis virtually has great potential to raise awareness about the critical issues facing workers today,” said Dina Bakst, Co-Founder and Co-President of ABB. “While we will be taking a moment to reflect on how we have successfully fought against inequality and won, we remain laser focused on continuing to combat these issues.”
“With each passing day, society’s failure to protect marginalized workers continues to have profound economic and public health consequences,” said Sherry Leiwant, Co-Founder and Co-President of ABB. “On May 11, as we start to have a glimpse of hope for a more normal spring and summer, we will simultaneously be fighting and celebrating the progress we’ve made as a way to show that we can do more, and that we can do better.”
