“Today, the Trump Administration announced an Executive Order illegally attempting to dismantle the Department of Education. The Department of Education is the key civil rights agency tasked with ensuring students have quality access to education, including by enforcing Title IX, the law that protects students against gender-based discrimination and harassment. This represents an attack on all students, but especially groups that are more susceptible to discrimination like LGBTQ students and pregnant students.
In particular, leaving students without recourse from being forced out of school when they become parents will have lasting consequences for women’s economic security and ability to participate in and thrive in the workforce. This is a huge overstep of power that could nonetheless have a devastating impact for students, their families, and the overall fight for gender equity. We will fight back.”
