At the core of A Better Balance’s mission is the commitment to keep families together and safe. We want to address the inhumane detention policies currently in effect at our borders. First and foremost, separating children from their parents and putting them in detention is horrifying and categorically unacceptable. There are reports that one baby was taken away from her mother in the midst of breastfeeding. Taking children away from their parents, or even detaining them with their parents, is antithetical to our mission of supporting parents and families as they seek to care for their children and loved ones.
These policies must end.
Not only are they morally depraved, but they also create a culture whereby employers and others feel emboldened to take advantage of undocumented workers, and workers in turn are fearful to stand up for their rights at the risk of facing deportation.
As employment rights advocates, we are here today to let you know, if you are working in the United States, you have rights in your workplaces, regardless of immigration status. These rights protect you from wage theft, discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sex, gender, national origin, and more. Depending on where you live, you may also have additional rights.
