Today, the New York State Legislature and Governor Cuomo reached an agreement on a bill that will put into place emergency paid sick leave protections for millions of New Yorkers who are under mandatory or precautionary quarantine due to COVID-19. A Better Balance Co-Founders and Co-Presidents Sherry Leiwant and Dina Bakst—longtime leaders in the push for paid sick time in New York and nationwide—released the following statement:
“A Better Balance applauds Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature for swiftly reaching an agreement on a bill that will ensure millions of working families in New York are provided job protection and economic security amidst the COVID-19 public health crisis. In this time of crisis, the new law will help New Yorkers to follow New York State’s and the CDC’s recommendations to protect their own health and the health of their loved ones, while also protecting the health of the public as a whole. ”
A Better Balance was proud to help lead efforts to pass this law, as we have done in New York City and Westchester County, 11 other states, Washington D.C., and 19 other localities around the country.
