On February 15th, A Better Balance joined the Mississippi Black Women’s Roundtable for their annual legislative advocacy day and press conference at the Mississippi State Capitol. In Mississippi, about 76% of workers do not receive paid family leave through their employers, and low wage workers are even less likely to have access to paid family leave. Moreso, only about 33% of workers in Mississippi are eligible for unpaid leave under the FMLA. These current gaps leave many Black workers, especially women, forced to choose their job over their health. ABB’s Senior Staff Attorney of the Southern Office, Kameron Dawson, joined the event and spoke about why the state urgently needs supportive workplace policies like paid leave, paid sick time, and access to paid safe days to protect the health and economic security of workers and families.
