Marcella is the Managing Attorney of Direct Legal Services at A Better Balance where she has provided thousands of individuals with information about their workplace rights since first joining the organization as a Carr Center for Reproductive Justice Fellow following her graduation from NYU School of Law in 2015. In addition to staffing A Better Balance’s free and confidential legal helpline, Marcella represents workers in employment disputes and supervises other attorneys and members of the direct services team.
Marcella approaches her advocacy work as women’s rights work and has focused on pregnancy discrimination in the workplace. She strives to honor the legal legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by working to combat antiquated sex stereotypes that harm both women and men. Marcella also has expertise in paid sick leave and paid family and medical leave laws and is passionate about ensuring that all workers have access to leave when needed to care for their own health as well as that of their loved ones.
As a law student, Marcella served as executive editor of NYU Review of Law & Social Change and was a board member of NYU Law Students for Reproductive Justice. She also participated in the school’s inaugural Reproductive Justice Clinic, assisting in the first federal challenge to a pregnant woman’s arrest under a “personhood”-like measure. During her summers, Marcella interned here at A Better Balance and at National Advocates for Pregnant Women.
She is a proud graduate of Hunter College, City University of New York, where she majored in English.
