Este Mes de la Herencia Hispana, A Better Balance honra a todos nuestros clientes Latinxs y las Latinxs que nos llaman. Creemos que ningún trabajador debería tener que tomar la decisión imposible de elegir entre su trabajo o su familia. Es por eso que tenemos una línea telefónica directa gratuita y confidencial, tanto en inglés como en español, donde ofrecemos información y servicios legales para aquellos que han sufrido discriminación en el lugar de trabajo. Queremos que los trabajadores Latinxs estén informados de sus derechos y se sientan seguros al afirmarlos. Ofrecemos servicios independientemente de la ciudadanía de los trabajadores o el estado migratorio.
Hace poco más de un año, también lanzamos una nueva línea directa legal para obtener información sobre la nueva ley de licencia familiar pagada de Nueva York, que comenzó a ofrecer beneficios en enero de 2018. Nuestra línea directa ayuda a los neoyorquinos a conocer sus derechos en inglés y español bajo esta ley. Para los trabajadores Latinxs el acceso a la información sobre la licencia familiar pagada es particularmente importante ya que a menudo trabajan en trabajos que no ofrecen pago por ausencia y suelen cuidar de un circulo familiar amplio.
En el último año, hemos llamada para terminar con la violencia sexual contra los trabajadores agrícolas inmigrantes a través del Proyecto Bandana y nos opongamos firmemente a las separaciones familiares en la frontera. El Día de la Madre compartimos la historia de Ileana, cuya madre sufría de demencia en Nicaragua. This Hispanic Heritage Month, A Better Balance honors all of our Latinx clients and callers. We believe that no worker should have to make the impossible choice between their job and their family. That’s why we run a free and confidential hotline—in English and Spanish—where we provide information and legal services for those who have suffered from workplace discrimination. We want Latinx workers to be informed of their rights and feel confident asserting them. We provide services regardless of workers’ citizenship or immigration status.
Just over a year ago, we also launched a new legal hotline for information about New York’s new paid family leave law, which started offering benefits in January 2018. Our hotline helps New Yorkers learn about their rights under this law in English and Spanish. For Latinx workers who often work in jobs that offer no leave benefits and who often care for extended family, access to information about paid family leave is particularly important.
In the past year, we have called for an end to sexual violence against migrant farmworkers through the Bandana Project and come out strongly against family separations at the border. On Mother’s Day we shared the story of Ileana, whose mother was suffering from dementia in Nicaragua. Ileana couldn’t afford to stop working without pay, but she also couldn’t imagine not being there for her mom when she needed her. Ileana called A Better Balance’s free legal hotline, and we helped her take the time she needed to care for her mother without risking her job or her financial security.
