Statement on the Confirmation of Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor

On February 20, the Senate voted to confirm Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of the Department of Labor. The following is a statement from Inimai Chettiar, President of A Better Balance:

“The reality is that workers in lower-wage jobs – including shift, hourly and physical-labor jobs – depend on a committed Labor Secretary to fight for and enforce their rights in the workplace. Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s confirmation comes at a time of rising alarm that protections for workers – including working women – are under fire and being dismantled. As Labor Secretary, she will determine the administration’s course of action on such critical workplace policies as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act (PUMP Act), as well as numerous wage and hour laws, federal contractor requirements, and other protections for working Americans. We hope that as a member of the President’s Cabinet, she will listen to and take action to provide what workers truly need – not pursue actions that attack and undermine working families. We will be watching carefully.”
